Over July 4th weekend, 2009 we vacationed with Josie at the dog-friendly Hounds Tooth Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine |
The inn has over an acre of grounds and an enclosed area where the dogs can exercise off-leash. |
The main house of the inn has 4 large guest rooms. The owners sleep in the converted barn. |
There's even a bench and some shade for humans in the dog corral! |
We drove up to Maine on Thursday afternoon. So Friday, we took Josie to the Kennebunk dog park and then drove down to Gooch's Beach. |
During the summer, dogs are not allowed on the beach itself from 9-6. But, Josie enjoyed the promenade. |
For Friday lunch, we drove to Pier 77 at Cape Porpoise. We sat with Josie outdoors as we ate our scrumptious lobster rolls. |

The small bridge over the Kennebunk River that is the entrance into Kennebunkport itself |
Just before the bridge we discovered an art gallery selling wind-driven kinetic sculptures |
|
The sculptures were so captivating that we bought a small one for our perennial garden |
Wrong season for whale watching! |
The dog guarding the entrance to the pet store in Kennebunkport |
Parking in the center of Kennebunkport is almost non-existent. The little that there is is very expensive. |
Josie found the entrance to one boutique very interesting! |
At Gibran's General Store, Josie finally found a clerk she could talk to! |
The clerk recommended the homemade blueberry and blackberry preserves. Yummy! |
Low tide in the creek behind some of the stores |
Friday night we drove into Wells for dinner at Joshua's. A young chef, he sources all ingredients from his father's farm just down the road. |
A path leads through the preserve, winding through woods and to several lookouts over the salt marshes. |

We rewarded ourselves by driving back to Cape Porpoise for lunch. This time to the open deck at the Chowder House for steamers and lobsters. |
On Saturday, we took Josie to the Rachel Carson refuge for some back-to-nature |
Saturday night, we left Josie at the inn and went for dinner to Hurricanes in Kennebunkport |
|
Hurricanes is right next to the bridge over the Kennebunk River |
|
As we finished our dinner and the sun went down, we could see the fireworks from Gooch's Beach over the treetops |
|
Sunday was time to relax a little, pack up, and say our goodbyes |
|
Josie said that she had lots of fun in Kennebunkport! |
Randee and Norm Perkins, the owners of the Hounds Tooth, enjoyed Josie just as much as she did them |
